Is Social Media Adding to Your Stress? Here’s How to Reclaim Your Time
In today’s fast-paced world, social media has become a constant companion for many of us. While it’s great for staying connected and entertained, it’s also a major contributor to stress, overwhelm, and a sense of never having enough time. The endless scrolling, comparison traps and constant notifications are robbing us of time and energy – time that could be spent nurturing our mental and physical health.
The Hidden Cost of Scrolling
I’ll admit it – I’ve been there, too. It starts with what I think will be a quick check of Instagram or Facebook, and before I know it I’m in a ‘scroll hole’ and 30 minutes (or more) have vanished. I’d tell myself it’s harmless, but deep down, I knew those minutes could’ve been better spent. Maybe you’ve felt the same way, wondering why there never seems to be enough time to tackle the things that truly matter.
Social media isn’t just a harmless distraction. Studies have shown that excessive use can lead to:
- Increased anxiety and feelings of inadequacy due to constant comparisons.
- Poor sleep quality from late-night scrolling.
- Reduced focus and productivity, as frequent notifications pull you away from important tasks.
- Neglect of self-care routines like exercising, meal prepping, or practising mindfulness.
The hours spent mindlessly scrolling could be used to improve your health, strengthen relationships, or pursue personal goals. Instead, we’re often left feeling drained and behind on what really matters.
How to Overhaul Your Online Habits
The good news? You can regain control over your time and mental well-being. Here are some practical tips to rethink your relationship with social media:
Set Time Limits
Use app timers or your phone’s built-in features to limit how much time you spend on social media. Even setting a daily cap of 30 minutes can make a big difference.
Schedule Tech-Free Times
Designate specific times of the day to be completely offline. For example, make mornings screen-free to focus on journaling, meditation, or exercise. Similarly, set a cut-off time in the evening to wind down and prepare for restful sleep.
Unfollow and Curate
Go through your social media accounts and unfollow anyone or anything that doesn’t add value to your life. Focus on accounts that inspire, educate, or truly uplift you.
For example, Emma Staples of BodyBlitz Fitness shares uplifting and empowering content that can inspire your fitness journey
Replace Scrolling with Healthy Habits
When you feel the urge to grab your phone, try doing something that benefits your mental or physical health.
Some ideas:
- Practice deep breathing exercises.
- Take a 10-minute walk.
- Read a book or listen to an audiobook.
- Write in a gratitude journal.

Turn Off Notifications
Constant notifications keep you tethered to your phone. Turn them off or at least mute them for a set period of time, and check social media intentionally during pre-set times instead.
Create a “No-Phone Zone”
Designate areas in your home where phones are not allowed, such as the dining table or bedroom. This encourages mindful eating, better sleep, and quality time with loved ones.
Conduct a Social Media Detox
A while back, I decided to take a complete break from social media for a week. At first, it felt strange – almost like I was missing out on something. But by the end of the week, I felt lighter, more present, and genuinely more productive. Taking a break can help you reflect on how much you really need it in your life and what you’d rather focus on instead.
The Benefits of Cutting Back
When you reduce your time on social media, you’ll likely notice:
- Less stress and anxiety.
- Improved focus and productivity.
- More time for hobbies, exercise, and quality relationships.
- Greater overall well-being.
- Reclaim Your Time and Energy
Social media isn’t inherently bad, but it can take a toll when it starts to dominate your life. By reassessing your online habits and making intentional changes, you can free up precious time for the things that truly matter – your mental health, physical health, and overall happiness.
