Breathing is something we do automatically – about 20,000 times a day – yet most of us never stop to think about whether we’re doing it correctly. The way we breathe has a profound impact on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. When done properly, it can reduce stress, improve focus, enhance energy levels, and even support our immune system. However, when we breathe poorly – such as shallow, rapid breathing – we can unknowingly contribute to anxiety, fatigue, and even chronic health issues.
Understanding the Primitive Brain and the Stress Response
To truly appreciate the importance of breathwork, we need to understand how our brain responds to stress. Deep within the brain lies the amygdala, a small but powerful structure responsible for detecting threats and triggering our fight-or-flight response. This is an ancient survival mechanism designed to keep us safe from danger.
When our brain perceives a threat – whether real or imagined – the amygdala sends signals to the body to prepare for action. This triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, causing our heart rate to increase, breathing to become shallow, and muscles to tense up. This response was crucial for our ancestors, who needed to react quickly to life-threatening situations.
However, in today’s world, our amygdala doesn’t just react to physical threats. It also responds to emails, deadlines, social pressures, and other daily stressors. Because of this, many of us live in a constant state of fight-or-flight, where our nervous system remains overstimulated. This can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, insomnia, and even long-term health conditions such as high blood pressure and digestive issues.
Many people don’t even realize they are habitual ‘mouth breathers,’ especially at night while they sleep. Breathing through the nose is essential for overall health, as the nasal passages act as a natural filter, trapping dust, allergens, and harmful bacteria before they enter the lungs. The intricate structure of the nose also helps to warm and humidify the air, making it easier for the body to absorb oxygen efficiently. In contrast, mouth breathing bypasses this crucial filtration system, increasing exposure to bacteria and viruses and leaving the body more vulnerable to illness. Additionally, habitual mouth breathing can keep the body in a low-level state of fight-or-flight, even during sleep, placing unnecessary strain on both the respiratory and circulatory systems. This can contribute to poor sleep quality, fatigue, and increased stress levels, further exacerbating the cycle of anxiety and overwhelm.
This is where breathwork comes in as a powerful tool to reset the nervous system.
The Science Behind Breathwork
Breathwork is the practice of using intentional breathing techniques to calm the mind and body. When we engage in slow, deep breathing, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the “rest-and-digest” system. This helps counteract the fight-or-flight response, reducing stress hormones and promoting a sense of relaxation.
Studies have shown that breathwork can:
- Lower blood pressure and heart rate
- Reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone)
- Improve focus and concentration
- Enhance sleep quality
- Support emotional regulation
- Boost the immune system
Simply put, breathwork helps to rewire the brain so that we don’t stay stuck in chronic stress mode. It teaches the amygdala that we are safe, allowing the body to return to a state of balance.
A Simple Breathwork Technique: The 4-7-8 Breath
One of the easiest and most effective breathwork techniques to calm the nervous system is the 4-7-8 breathing method.
How to do it:
- Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for a count of 7.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8, making a gentle “whooshing” sound.
- Repeat this cycle 4 times.
This technique helps slow the heart rate, reduce anxiety, and bring the body into a relaxed state. It’s perfect for when you feel overwhelmed, before sleep, or anytime you need a reset.
Take Control of Your Stress with Breathwork
If you find yourself feeling constantly anxious, overwhelmed, or exhausted, it’s time to take back control of your nervous system. Breathwork is a simple but powerful way to regain balance, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.
